JGALAXY SERIES

“Turn it over and over, because everything is in it...”
(Mishnah, Pirkei Avot, 5:21)

In July, we launched a series of weekly meetings in Haifa, Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, and Beersheva with interesting and inspiring people, including journalists, writers, politicians, rabbis, and business professionals. We engage them in conversation about the questions we are all seeking answers to.

We discuss Jewish values, Jewish holidays and traditions through classical Jewish texts, literature, and the heritage of Eastern European Jewry. We learn how to read Shai Agnon, Isaac Bashevis-Singer and Chaim Grade and find the hidden messages in twentieth-century Yiddish literature. We learn how holidays were celebrated in Eastern Europe and plunge into the world of Jewish knowledge, answering many modern questions over a glass of wine in the cozy atmosphere of a library or a Beit midrash. Our first meeting in the Begin Heritage Center in Jerusalem with Boruch Gorin and Dan Makogon drew over 100 participants. We discussed the near and long-term future of Russian-speaking Jews in the FSU and here in Israel.

New Olim in their 20’s and 30’s joined all of our enriching monthly activities below.

TEL AVIV CITY QUEST

Shishi Shabbat and Aquest Games organized an evening Quest in Tel Aviv for our Bat Yam and Tel Aviv area participants to combine several very important activities: walking, learning and enjoying.

The Quest was a spectacular success! Our teams walked, ran, sang songs, solved riddles together and opened magic chests).

We drank chasers on the square in front of the Carmel market and wine on Habima square!

It was just amazing and fun. I met lots of people I know and some new faces. Although we didn't win the First prize, I'd definitely have a great night to remember.

GIRLS NIGHT CREATIVE MATER CLASS

This was our second creative bachelorette party in a cozy courtyard with Lida. This time we created a beautiful author's lamp from glass bottles, using a decoupage technique.

And they turned out fantastic! Our new Olim guests had an opportunity to make friends and spend a beautiful creative evening together.

Thank you for the great master class ! From such simple materials, we can create such beauty! It was magic, and so delightful meeting new people. I would love to come again.

POSITIVE PSYCHOLOGY IN JUDAISM

During this meeting with Positive Psychology coach Alexandra Zharovsky, we learned how our thinking affects reality, and how positive psychology can be helpful in life.

We discussed how Jewish rituals and traditions support a healthy outlook and how aspects of Judaism respond to our psychological needs.

It was interesting to talk with Sasha and learn exciting facts about Judaism. In addition, we practiced jumping on one leg, and came out feeling quite positive from the lecture!

SECRET ROADS OF THE KNIGHTS OF GALILEE BUS TOUR

We invited our participants to an unforgettable bus tour of the castles and gorges of Galilee. Our guide Sergey Polyachok took us through the secret roads of the knights of Galilee, descending into the valley, passing Teutonic castles, and crusader ruins. We also visited the Montfort Fortress, and Yehi'am, and Milya castles. The best surprise was meeing a knight in armor, who spoke in detail about his uniform and taught the group to decipher local town names. The knights also drank beer, so we also visited a local brewery.

What a wonderful tour! I am interested in this topic and this part of history. A big thanks to the knight who showed us real armor, I’m glad we stopped at the kibbutz with one of the most popular breweries in Israel. It was a great end to our excursion on a very hot day!

RIDDLES AND SECRETS OF THE OLD CITY OF BEERSHEVA

We organized a guided Friday tour around Beersheva, especially for all the newcomers and recent Olim. We walked in very pleasant company around the old Turkish railway station, and visited an exhibition of nature photographs and paintings. Then we continued to the British Cemetery and the Anzac Soldiers Memorial Center, where we heard moving stories about the soldiers who died for Beer Sheva and how the Australian and New Zealand “Lighthorse Brigade” ended up in our city. We ended our walk in the Allenby Garden, admired the beauty of this place, and talked about the person who the garden is named after.

Great tour! I dreamed of walking around these places that I’d heard of and learning so many interesting things about Beersheva.

ARGAMAN PROJECT

DESIGN MUSIUM IN HOLON. EXHIBITION “OVERDOSED”
June 24th, 2022 – Tel Aviv and Central Region

Our guide Asya started by talking about the Argaman and Shishi Shabbat Israeli projects, and the history of the Design Museum in Holon. Then we walked through the new exhibition, discussed the approach of the curators, of Glila Barzilai Hollander's collection and the importance of the viewer's eye. We walked around two floors and discussed the place of the history of objects (for example, chairs or tires) in understanding local history and culture. We talked about going beyond ordinary thinking and the place of materialism in our modern lives. After the tour, we discussed what each of us found and is taking away from this exhibition.

What an excellent exhibition and tour! Many thanks to Argaman - without Asya, I would have missed many new perspectives from this visit.

OPENING OF SUMMER SEMESTER: MUSEOLOGY IN ISRAEL
June 14th, 2022 – Tel Aviv and Central Region

We started by getting to know the participants, introducing the Argaman project plans for the summer semester and introducing our lecturer Natalia Kopelyanskaya, art curator and museologist.

Natalie told us about her Aliyah and how her exploration of Israel's museum scene began. She shared with us the features of museum life in Israel, an “island state” located far from countries where the main "art events" take place.

We discussed what we like about the museums of the world, what we still lack in Israeli museums and what museums Israel does best - archaeological museums and national parks.

Very interesting meeting and lecturer. I just arrived in Israel and now I will understand much better what awaits me in local museums. I am so glad that there are such projects here as Argaman, for I come from the world of art. These meetings will help me a lot to adapt to Jewish and Israeli culture.
