After the holidays we continued our tradition to gather and play table and intellectual games in Bat Yam. Now we have permanent players who come every month and of course new members. It was such fun to meet, share news with one another and then form teams and play.
I was hesitant to come because I like simple games, but luckily you have both strategic and and more basic games. I am glad that I found people here to play and unwind with. All thanks to Shishi in Bat Yam.

We launched our Autumn semester with an overview of the history of Israeli Art, by art guide and educator Maria Malakh. She discussed the founding of the Betzalel Academy and the movement in Israeli art from Zionism and Biblical themes to abstract and readymade. We spoked about the influence of earlier Jewish artists and European art on Israeli art, and why Picasso is the most beloved European artist in Israel. We finished with observations about Israeli art galleries and exhibitions, including “Fresh Paint” which we will attend next month.
It was wonderful. I needed a lecture like this help understand what Israeli art is all about. Now I am ready to learn more about Jewish and Israeli culture and history.

Continuing a fantastic eight year tradition, our all-night study festival on Hoshana Raba featured excellent lecturers and attracted a full audience of young Russian-speaking Olim, this time in the beautiful Begin Heritage Center in Jerusalem. This evening also marked 10 Years of Shishi Shabbat Yisraeli’s activities, building community and celebrating the bonds between Russian-speaking Olim, Israel, and the Jewish People.
Natalie Shnaiderman, our long-time partner from Genesis Philanthropy Group, opened the evening, followed by former Ambassador to Russia Gary Koren, and a series of lectures, art and music workshops on the theme bridging between communities of the Jewish people. We enjoyed refreshments in our Shishi Shabbat Yisraeli Sukkah, erected especially for the occasion, and finished with our traditional dawn walking tour to the Kotel.

Shishi Shabbat Israel organized a bus excursion from Tel Aviv to an unusual and very interesting community - the Circassians in the Galilee villages of Kfar Kama.
Our guide, Pavel Bershtein, shared their history as a Caucasian people of 12 tribes living mainly in the northern Caucasus of Russia and in Turkey.
Most Circassians, including those in Israel, belong to Sunni Islam.
They constitute about 0.06% of the population of Israel, serve in the Israeli army and police, and are very loyal to the country.
We learned how the Circassians came to Israel, preserved their culture and language why the mosque in Kfar Kama is so unusual.
We enjoyed a tour of the village and Circassian museum, chatted with locals, and watched an amazing Circassian dance ensemble performance.

Valentina Litinetskaya started our lecture with the question "When did Jews appear in Sardinia". The truth is that we don't know. The historical archive of this island are in the little-known Sardinian language, but there were Sardinians on the shores of Canaan, including Akko, in the 14th century. According to the archaeological findings, the ancient Canaanite commander Sisra was from Sardinia. The earliest mention of Sardinia is year 19 AD when 4000 Jews were sent there from Rome. Valya shared other proofs of the Jewish community in Sardinia.
Thanks for this lecture! I never thought that we have a Jewish diaspora in Sardinia. I really enjoy hearing about uncommon places in the world that have connections with us and their own Jewish communities.

Shishi Shabbat Yisraeli held its first ever Friday-Shabbat Seminar geared towards (thought not only) the many young couples who met and married through Shishi Shabbat Yisraeli, and are today raising their young families in Israel!
Over 50 families signed up immediately, showing the incredible need for such weekends, but we narrowed the group down to 23 families (close to 100 participants) by focusing on the age group 3-8 for the children. We began with a hike in the Sataf Forest near Jerusalem with activities for the children, brought in Shabbat together with discussion and songs, and the parents enjoyed excellent sessions on warm and effective parenting, schooling, Israeli cultural adaptation and more, while the children were busy with creative activities with our student madrichim. The atmosphere of the seminar was wonderful, if not a bit noisy...
I used to love participating in Jewish activities and hikes with Shishi Shabbat Yisraeli, but was sure it was over after I had children! Now I’ve found my community again, just when I needed them most. It is so important to talk to parents with the same challenges!
Olga, mother of 3
We’ve lived 3 years in Israel and but never experienced Shabbat before this weekend.

Our guide from the Haifa Museum led us through the German Colony, which was built by the Templars who arrived in Palestine during the 1800’s, believing that their settlement would save the world. We learned about the Templars and their community, their impact on the development of Haifa, and the families and events in Haifa during the late 19th and early 20th century.
Thanks for this series of historical meetings! Now I have a much better understanding of Haifa and its origins and feel more a part of this city – I look forward to learning more!

We are all different, and everyone has their way of approaching Yom Kippur. But at least one thing unites all Jews (and people in general) – the need to stop and evaluate what we have done and what can be improved. Together with Pavel Bernshtein, we experienced the Yom Kippur atmosphere by walking through the religious areas of Jerusalem, plunging into the atmosphere of preparations for this day, seeing different forms of "kapparot".
We visited the Geula and Mea She'arim districts, saw the grave of the Ukrainian Admor buried in the center of Jerusalem, walked past the most fashionable shops, and discussed the revolutionary changes taking place in ultra-Orthodox communities in recent years.
