ARGAMAN JEWISH CULTURAL PROJECT

“FRESH PAINT” ART FAIR - WITH MASHA MALAKH

October 24th, 2021 – Tel Aviv and Central Region

Jewish educator and Art-guide Masha Malakh started with an explanation about the history of the Art Fair “Fresh Paint” – how projects and young artists are selected and curated for the "greenhouse". Then we walked through and she shared the stories of some of the participating artists. For example we saw the works of Elena Ceretti Stein, an Italian-Israeli artist who made Aliyah in 2014, and is studying in Bezalel’s MFA program in Tel Aviv. Based on the mosaic floor of a 4th-century synagogue featuring a pagan zodiac wheel alongside traditional images of a Torah ark and menorahs in Hammat Tiberias, she painted oil color zodiac signs and traditional images on IKEA carpets. Another young artist that we talked about is Yael Serlin who computerized gold embroidery on black fabrics according to drawings (symbols) from the Jewish cemeteries in Edirne and Poland 2018-2021. After the excursion we took a half an hour to walk through the Art Fair by ourselves and then met outside to discuss what we saw and felt in the exhbition.

It’s so cool that Argaman takes us to important israeli Art Fairs with professional guides year by year. It was my third “Fresh Paint” experience with your project and I feel more confident about my understanding and knowing Israeli Art.

MEETING ARTIST ELENA REVENKO

October 21th, 2021 – Tel Aviv and Central Region

Israeli artist and graphic designer Elena Revenko first shared the story about her childhood in Belarus, how she started to love art and learn to draw. Then she told us about her “Aliya” at age 14 years old and how different the art schools are in Israel. She was accepted to Bezalel Academy and her first big art project was about the psychology of the mind - ego, superego, id… She worked as a graphic designer and designed some of the milk cartons we drink from today! She’s participated in "Fresh Paint", in international exhibitions and creative collaboration with her artist friends, such as costumes based on her sketches which are used in the Moscow Circus. One of her most interesting works is "The Wall of the Communities" in the ANU Museum. After Lena finished, we talked for a long time about the artist's place in Israel, how to succeed in the Israeli art scene and where to look for inspiration.

Incredible woman! Now I want to visit the ANU museum to see her last works. I’m an artist and new in Israel, so the conversation after her lecture helped me very much. Thank you Argaman, for this opportunity.

VISITING JOSEPH BAU MUSEUM

October 7th, 2021 – Tel Aviv and Central Region

Joseph & Rebecca Bau’s daughter, Tslila, shared the story about her father by showing his animation works. He was Israel’s first cartoonist, and he created the first Hebrew fonts, assembling an animation studio at his home from parts he found in the trash. Few remember him for this, because Yosef Bau became a Mossad spy, a man who made false documents for all covert operations abroad. He gave up fame for the sake of serving Israel. He wrote books about his life in the Holocaust, and his work with false documents saved many Jews.. We talked a lot about creativity, about Yosef's love for Hebrew, about the importance of humor in difficult situations.

Such a strong man with a hard fate, but also with a lot of humor and very talented. It was such an inspiration for me – please take us more to places like this.

BAT YAM ART MUSEUM - MOBY

Have you ever heard about the Bat Yam art museum? Most of the people will say NO, but it exists and is worth visiting. Natali Asher Aman, art critic and tour guide, started our tour with the history of the museum, a discussion of the meaning of contemporary art and what is behind the exhibition title "Tempest in a Glass of Tea". Natali shared the biography of artist Issachar Ribak. In the next building of the museum - house of Shalom Ash - Natali spoke about provocative literature. Why did Ash write in Yiddish and how does contemporary art interacts with his texts and plots.

I never heard of Bat Yam museum before, so I decided to come and see.It was interesting – although not big, it still has a lot to show you. Thanks Shishi Shabbat for taking us to new places and thanks to Natali for sharing her knowledge!

HEBREW SLANG MASTER CLASS: AM ISRAEL HAI ... BESERET!

We met for a Hebrew slang master class with Evgeny Treyberman, a Hebrew teacher, a specialist in pedagogy, and informal education. At the meeting, we heard how slang penetrated modern Hebrew, learned several common slang phrases, and received answers to questions related to the topic.

Definitely a great Hebrew slang workshop from Evgeny! We learned a lot about the formation of words, the exciting interweaving of Yiddish and Arabic, and I learned new words and expressions.

FRIDAY SHABBAT SEMINAR #81 IN TIBERIAS

I am in Israel for almost four years but had my first Shishi Shabbat experience this weekend! The atmosphere was really warm and I met so many good friends – I was not expecting that. Hiking in the Jordan Valley and swimming in the Kinneret on Friday, singing to bring Shabbat in like years ago in camp ( I thought those years were gone!), the great lectures from Zhenya and Raphael about Chanuka and the amazing Dona Grazia and the Jews who came here after the expulsion from Spain. The hotel was magic and I loved the tour of the doll exhibits, game tables and costumes. Thank you for all the effort and planning to create these seminars. I will come again!

EN PLEIN AIR FOR EVERYONE, WE DRAW TOGETHER IN NATURE

During this open air event on a warm and very sunny day, we gave participants the opportunity to plunge into the world of relaxing painting in theYarkon park Tel Aviv. The participants drew sketches under the guidance of experienced artist Ksenia Revzin. Sketches are an important part of the artist's work and the nature of Yarkon Park was a perfect subject for drawing. Several hours of the master class flew by, and we finished with a friendly picnic on the grass.

It was an interesting master class in a friendly and cozy atmosphere in this central park. Thanks to Shishi Shabbat Israeli and our artist Ksenia for a wonderful Friday.

KIBBUTZ YAD MORDECHAI: A HONEY TASTING ISRAEL STORY

Yad Mordechai is one of the first kibbutzim founded in Israel in 1936. We went to the House of Honey and saw the magical world of the bee factory with our own eyes. The honey produced by Kibbutz Yad Mordechai is known throughout the country. We also visited the former buildings of the kibbutz of the first half of the twentieth century and saw how the kibbutz inhabitants lived at that time. After that, we went for a ride on a tractor in true kibbutz style.

It was my dream to visit Kibbutz Yad Mordechai, and I'm happy I had this opportunity! It was an exciting tour: we saw picturesque places in the South of Israel, beautiful amateur sculptures, a monument to Mordechai Anilevich, a battlefield in 1948, a kibbutz museum in the past. And even had a chance to ride a tractor train!

HAIFA HISTORICAL TOUR

We learned about the history of the first Jewish district of Haifa and toured the streets between two famous architectural buildings: the Struk Museum and Madatech – Israel’s National Museum of Science, Technology, and Space. These two buildings were built in an eclectic style, unique for the pioneers of Jewish Aliyah at the beginning of the last century. Many people played a significant role in the life and development of the Haifa and its Hadar neighborhoods.

Fascinating information - you may live in an area and not even think about the fact that once it was the very center of the city, where so many important people lived. The series of excursions turned out to be excellent - at last, I began to understand the entire city's history better.

HIKING THE CARMEL MOUNTAINS

One of the most picturesque and exciting hikes is the descent along with the dry mouth of the Yagur River from the town of Isfiya to Kibbutz Yagur. There were ramps, amazing views, lots of socializing and sports.

Super hike! It was not easy, but very exciting. I made many new acquaintances, everyone helped each other, and it was real team building! I didn't think that there are such beautiful places around, thanks for showing me them!

Such a great project, thanks for the work done! There was an opportunity to turn inward ourselves and to the history of our ancestors. Especially for people born in the USSR and raised in Russia. I listen to your podcast when my baby sleeps, and I am filled with power and spirituality!
