30.06.2021 | Bat Yam
We recently launched a new community-building project in Bat Yam. We started our evening by all of us introducing ourselves. Most of the participants live in Bat Yam, and are aged 24-30. We discussed their expectations of our young Olim community (finally able to gather inside after Corona) and fielded their suggestions to help make our project better. After sharing future Shishi Shabbat events in Bat Yam and elsewhere, we had a great time playing board games together and meeting new friends.
It's so cool that now we have an interesting activity to do together in nice company. Before coming to Israel, I played table games a lot with my friends, but here I couldn't find the people to play with. Thanks to Shishi I have a place and very cool company now. Looking forward to the next meeting.

Every week, three of us get together to discuss the weekly parasha, ask questions, suggest answers, be surprised, indignant, in awe, and of course, reflect on the Eternal. We are an orthodox Chabad Rabbi Yigal, a hipster programmer Edik and the cheerful Haifa Director of Shishi Shabbat Yisraeli, Lidia.
Let's see how both religious and secular people understand the Tanach based on their world views and experiences.

I wanted to send you a big thank you! You are doing fantastic work, you are incredible! I’m listening to you in Ufa (Russia) every week, and you motivated me to read Tanach before every podcast edition to increase my understanding! And even more than that, I suddenly feel a need to visit our local synagogue at least once a week. Before that, I felt very distant from Jewish tradition. Thank you so much, and good luck!

Together with Vlad we walked around Jewish Krakow, where before WWI, one fourth of the population were Jews. He explained how to identify Jewish houses by the place for mezuzah on the doorpost. We travelled virtually from the 13th century Old Synagogue in the Kazimezh Quarter to the New Synagogue Rama and the Jewish cemetery. Vlad accompanied the tour with different stories from his travels in Krakow, which included many interesting real life tales.
It was very unusual to travel around a city that doesn't exist anymore - like time travelling. You see things that are no longer there or look different today. Krakow is one of my favorite cities, and thanks to Vlad and Shishi Shabbat, I now know more about its Jewish history.

This fascinating workshop was held at the House of Artists in Beersheva. During the class, we learned the secrets of working with water paints and learned how to paint a seascape under the guidance of the artist Kira Bondarenko.
At the master class with Kira, we got to know each other, drew the Mediterranean sea, received a charge of vivacity and inspiration, and became acquainted with various types of art. All participants came out with gorgeous pictures. We also saw a new exhibition of paintings and compositions in the House of Artists. It's great to be in such an inspiring place at the end of the week!

"ABRAHAM’S GOD, ISAAC’S FEAR" - FROM LECTURE SERIES "HERO AND VICTIM"
June 8th, 2021 - Tel Aviv and Central Region
Natalie Nesher Aman began the lecture by going back to the original text of the Binding of Isaac in the Bible and various interpretations of what was written. Then she discussed how this story is represented differently in art and theological texts of different religions. In Judaism, it is called the binding of Yitzhak. In Christianity - the sacrifice of Isaac or the sacrifice of Abraham. We discussed the earliest Jewish representations - mosaics in ancient synagogues. Natalie talked about how Yitzchak's age changed in the paintings during different periods, how you can interpret this, and why this is one of the most famous subjects of Israeli artists. One can understand society at one time or another better from the small details in the image.
Argaman is a challenge for me. I came without knowing anything about Israeli art and Jewish culture. It was difficult for me at the beginning, but today I get great pleasure from how many new things I am learning and how this knowledge is cumulative.

VISIT WITH ARTIST MIKHAIL YANKELEVICH, MAALEH ADUMIM
June 25th, 2021 - Tel Aviv and Central Region
Michael Yahilevich, a former Soviet Jewish activist and Israeli artist and educator, accompanied our group to the Moshe Kastel Museum. The museum director Eli shared Moshe Kastel’s biography and how he came to the technique of working with basalt. As we toured the museum, we discussed Kastel’s interactions with themes from Tanakh and Kabbala in his works.
Mikhail guided us through the temporary exhibition "Mesilot" - works of the creative community of which Mikhail himself is a part. The first hall tells the story of how they discovered the world of Judaism in the USSR and began to observe it underground, and the second hall, about leaving the FSU and who they have become 30 years later, after more than 20 years in Israel.
Our walk ended in the synagogue of the Makhanaim community. In the synagogue, Michael Yahilevich told us about the Mahanaim community, how they moved from Moscow to Maale Adumim, how he invented and implemented the fantastic design of the synagogue.
Thank you so much, Argaman! It was a very intense and deep trip, I learned so many new things! My mother lives in Maale Adumim and I often visit her, but I have never heard of the Moshe Kastel museum or the Mahanaim synagogue. Every meeting, you open the world to me anew!
