SEMINAR #78 WITH SHISHI SHABBAT YISRAELI IN BEIT ALPHA

I currently serve in the IDF, but came from Russia to study at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem 7 years ago and then made Aliya in 2015. It was the first time that I participated in a seminar of Shishi Shabbat Israeli and I would like to repeat this powerful experience in the near future. I loved touring in Zichron Yaakov and then the fascinating, famous burial areas of Beit Shearim, and every discussion and activity on Shabbat was fantastic. I really enjoyed the atmosphere at the seminar, which was organised really well and attracted a lot of interesting youth who want to learn more about our country by traveling, listening to lectures and spending time with one another.

Thank you so much for this opportunity!

BUS TOUR OF SAFED - THE CITY ASCENDING TO HEAVEN

On Friday, June 11, the Tel Aviv and Haifa branches of Shishi Shabbat Yisraeli organized a bus excursion to the ancient capital of Kabbala- Safed. Our guide for this day was Evgeny Shmuter. The excursion started from the observation deck of Mount Meron and wonderful views around Safed, and then we visited one of the oldest synagogues - The Abuhav Synagogue, a 15th-century synagogue the Spanish rabbi and kabbalist, Isaac Abuhav. Its design is said to be based upon kabbalistic teachings We also visited the artists' quarters, looked at the most historically interesting places of the city, spent time in the very unusual gallery KOSMIC KABBALAH ART and its founder from Denver David Friedman. At the end of the excursion, we visited the ruins of a fortress from the era of the Crusaders. Our guide talked about Tikkun Olam – fixing our world - and the relevant world views of sages and philosophers of the 16th century in Safed.

Haifa Museum’s Guide Jen Katzner walked us through Haifa's lower city and its extensive collection of graffiti. We talked about the formation and development of a famous Israeli group graffiti artists BFC and the Haifa Graffiti Festival, which was held several years in a row, and about the culture of street art in Israel. We walked along the works created during the last festival on the theme "Walls".

I couldn't even imagine Haifa's rich graffiti culture and that it had so many different street art festivals. Thank you for introducing me!

FRIDAY MORNING AT THE MOST STYLISH MUSEUM IN HOLON - DESIGN MUSEUM

We started our tour from the history of the building and how it was built. Inside the museum we visited several exhibitions: the first one was devoted to social evolution of humanity from the first tool to creation of the social networks. The most interesting thing that all the exhibits were found in museum warehouse during Corona lockdown.

The next exhibition was made of garbage, from Israel at the end of 20th century. We spoke about what these objects said about us and finished our tour on the Industrial Design exhibition.

I like this museum very much. Even though it's not my first time here, I always find something interesting here. Thanks to Asya for telling us many interesting stories in addition to the tour guide’s.

DELICIOUS EXCURSION WITH SHISHI SHABBAT YISRAELI AND Nefesh B’Nefesh

We celebrated the beginning of summer by picking cherries in the picturesque expanses of Gush Etzion.

In the Kfar Etzion fields, we were offered four varieties of cherries, as well as other berries, for picking, eating and bringing home for Shabbat!.

After picking berries, we had a fantastic excursion to the Lone Oak in Allon Shvut, learned all about the communities of Gush Etzion, and then tasted wine and toured the amazing winery.

It was a lovely and delicious day in the most friendly atmosphere!

MEETING THE LEGIONNAIRES WITH ALEX BLUMKIN

During this wonderful meeting in nature, Sasha Blumkin spoke about the history of ancient Rome, its culture, social and political structure. We discussed the Roman army and the relationship between ancient Rome and the Jewish People two thousand years ago.

And most fun was trying on the authentic Roman armor and equipment that helped us feel the atmosphere of that period.

It was an extraordinary meeting in a lovely place. Of course, the outfits and equipment of that era were very exciting. They inspired us, and for a minute, I felt like a real knight!

GASTRO TOUR IN JAFFA WITH INNA GORSHTEIN

There is no better way to understand the culture of a place than to immerse yourself in its culinary offerings. Everyone knows that Israeli food is extraordinarily tasty, but what is the secret of this gastronomic miracle?

Food is not only to satisfy hunger but a phenomenon of culture and the development of society. Inna Gorshtein shared with us the traditional and historic culinary features of Jewish and Israeli cuisine during a tour of Jaffa Flea Market, “Shuk Hapishpishim” where we tasted different dishes over 3 hours, drawn from different countries and national traditions.

At the end of this delicious excursion, Inna showed the participants part of the Swedish Museum and its extremely unusual exhibition about the earthquake which shook Tel Aviv during the 19th century.

ARAB-ISRAELI CONFLICT IN DATES AND FACES

For two weeks Israel was under attack and when it finally ended many people felt like discussing what had happened and more importantly why. So Pavel Bernshtein started his presentation with the history of our land and the source of the name Palestine and why it is important. Together we traveled through history line to current times. We spoke about Hamas, and why they are fighting us. We spoke about Israel and what we are defending. Why everything is not black on white and can’t be solved easily. Many interesting questions were raised so that we could reflect on the situation and share opinions.

I'm a new Oleh - I moved here about a year ago. After these tough days I was grateful to learn more about what was going on and to talk to people and hear their feelings. Thanks to Pasha for the well-structured information and different points of view, and thanks to Shishi for gathering so many nice people to talk to :)

WEEKLY «PARASHA THROUGH OUR EYES» PODCAST

Every week, three of us get together to discuss the weekly parasha, ask questions, suggest answers, be surprised, indignant, in awe, and of course, reflect on the Eternal. We are an orthodox Chabad Rabbi Yigal, a hipster programmer Edik and the cheerful Haifa Director of Shishi Shabbat Yisraeli, Lidia.

Let's see how both religious and secular people understand the Tanach based on their world views and experiences.

If you understand Russian you are more than welcome to find the recordings here:

I wanted to send you a big thank you! You are doing fantastic work, you are incredible! I’m listening to you in Ufa (Russia) every week, and you motivated me to read Tanach before every podcast edition to increase my understanding! And even more than that, I suddenly feel a need to visit our local synagogue at least once a week. Before that, I felt very distant from Jewish tradition. Thank you so much, and good luck!
