Lag Ba’Omer is a Jewish holiday celebrated on the 33rd day of the Counting of the Omer – the 18th of the month of Iyar. Eva Levit shared with us the Jewish history of this holiday, marking the hillula of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai (Rashbi), a Mishnaic sage and leading disciple of Rabbi Akiva in the 2nd century, and the day on which he revealed the deepest secrets of kabbalah in the form of the Zohar. This association has spawned several well-known customs on Lag BaOmer such as lighting bonfires and visiting the tomb of Bar Yochai in Meron.
It is also the day on which the plague that killed Rabbi Akiva's 24,000 disciples came to an end, and for some the end of the mourning period of Sefirat Ha’Omer. Eva shared some ideas from Jewish mysticism and answered participants’ many questions.

Boris told us about the secret Jews of Spain, who followed the traditions of their ancestors without being noticed for many years. But at some point, they had to fight for their freedom, left their underground, and became pirates. These were the true stories of Sephardic Jews - their lives, revenge, and triumphs.
Boris Dolin has the most original content and lectures. Thank you, Shishi Shabbat Yisraeli, for bringing such a great variety of exciting talks. I definitely revised my stereotype that all Jews looked like me, lived in Shtetls, and could not change their lives.. We were actually quite different - pirates and warriors for example!

In honor of May 9th, Victory Day against Nazi Germany, in collaboration with the Tel Aviv and Beersheva Municipalities, over 70 young volunteers from Shishi Shabbat Yisraeli brought flowers and gifts to 95 WWII veterans and Holocaust survivors. This year, despite the COVID-19, we were not able to organize our traditional celebrations together with them, but it was essential to visit our dear veterans and to express how thankful we are for their heroism. The majority of these WWII veterans are over 90 years old, and many live alone, so these days of isolation are extremely difficult for them.
All the veterans were grateful for our attention, and some even burst into tears. It is important to support them daily, as we have been trying to do, and not only on the holidays. I am glad that we have so many good young Olim volunteers with such big hearts!

Together with Pavel Bernstein we continued to explore the phenomenon of anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism. During this meeting, we spoke about the 20th century and the role of the USSR in creating stereotypes of Jews based on Soviet press and newsletters.
I was born in the USSR, where we knew almost nothing about the international relations between USSR and Israel. That’s why it’s so important to know and understand the truth. Very thankful to Pavel for the opportunity to learn and understand the real historical events and to fill this gap.

Sabbatai Zevi (Hebrew: שַׁבְּתַי צְבִי) is one of the most popular fake Messiahs in our history. He married a Torah scroll and was more popular than the Turkish sultan, but in the end he converted to Islam for the sake of Judaism.
I love Yevgeny`s lectures very much! He tells stories from Talmud in a straightforward way. These stories are about our tradition and how the Jewish community lived for thousands of years in Galut. It was a terrific lecture, with a lot of humor and a completely new story for me about Shabtai Zvi, who changed the people's attitudes toward Kabbalah.
