PODCAST PROJECT - TORAH THROUGH OUR EYES

We've launched a new season of podcasts, "Love, Torah & Relationships."

We delve into eternal topics with the help of the Torah and Jewish traditions. Leah, a psychologist, has joined our team in the new season. Religious and secular people gathered for a roundtable discussion to answer the most pressing questions. There is always something to think and laugh about. Conversations about the meaning of life can be easy and humorous too! Join us every week!

COMMUNITY HANNUKAH CELEBRATIONS

Without close family in Israel and rainy and cold weather outside, our participants truly appreciated the events we created in cities throughout Israel to celebrate Hannukah together. In Jerusalem, we had a fantastic competitive Hanukkah quiz and an Ice Hokku concert with warm wine and sufganiyot. In Haifa, we also enjoyed a Kosher Quiz and party with warm wine, food, and music. In Bat Yam and Beersheva we lit candles and listened to stories and history of the holiday with our favorite guides, festive food, and hot drinks.

Vlad is an outstanding lecturer and storyteller, I really enjoyed the evening! Our special thanks to Asia and Natasha for creating such a cozy atmosphere and for the hot cocoa:)

LECTURE ABOUT HANNUKKAH WITH YEVGENY TREIBERMAN

At the meeting, we discussed the themes and history of the Hanukkah holiday -how the Greeks imposed their culture on the Jews, and how the Maccabean clan rebelled and won. Also we learned how the Maccabiada sports competitions started, how they connect to the Jewish calendar and why they are still relevant.

This was a pleasant meeting among new and old friends where we learned a lot of exciting things about Hanukkah and even lit the second Hanukkah candle together!

BUS TOUR - IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF THE MACCABEES

Shishi Shabbat Yisraeli Tel Aviv organized , a bus tour and hike “In the footsteps of the Maccabees" before the holiday of Hanukkah. It is always awesome to spend pre-holiday free time in holiday-related places. Participants walked through the green fields of the Ben Shemen Forest and the valleys near Modiin, after the first rains. Our guide Dima Esterkin discussed the military and spiritual victory on Hanukkah, and why it is celebrated with donuts and candles, versus tanks at a military parade. We learned who the leaders were on both sides, where they lived, fought and were buried. We visited the most prominent sites of those days and received a realistic recounting of the battles and the challenges that the Maccabees overcame.

TABLE GAMES EVENING IN BAT YAM

We met as usual at the end of the month in our cozy Merkaz Tzeirim in Bat Yam. Before starting the games, we talked, shared news, and our plans for Shishi Shabbat in Bat Yam for the next couple of months, including our community celebration of the upcoming Hanuka holiday.

Before I made Aliya I used to play table games a lot. I knew special clubs in my city and had friends with common interests. When I moved to Israel I lost it for a while, but was happily surprised when Shishi Shabbat opened an evening of table games here, in my new city. It's so great that I finally found people to play with again.

ARGAMAN JEWISH CULTURAL PROJECT

PHOTO IS:RAEL – ANNUAL EXHIBITION TOUR

November 22nd, 2021 – Tel Aviv and Central Region

Our guide Hagar started with telling us the history of the 12-year old non-profit organization Photo IS:RAEL, whose mission is to minimize gaps between different social groups and generations through photography. A picture contains thousand worlds, as we say in Russian. This year the main theme is “Meeting Point”- between people or societies, between old and new, or something different. We saw a lot of great photographers. There was a big focus on ecological issues. One photographer shot touching and deep photos of street riots in Belarus in August 2020; another shot his family during their Aliya to Israel in the 1990’s, which was also sad story and raised a lot of questions. A third photographer collaborated with his daughter (from the time that she was three years old) about fears and they hope to work on this project for the next 50 years.

A lot of great pictures that make you think, and rethink some life positions. I like this new tradition of the Argaman project to visit Photo IS:REAL every year.

HERZLIYA ART MUSEUM

November 18th, 2021 - Tel Aviv and Central Region

Maria Malach - art critic, specialist in Israeli modern art, and Jewish educator described at first how all 6 exhibitions at the Herzliya Art Museum are united by one theme. All these projects in one way or another transform everyday objects, reflecting the absurdity of reality and fear of the unknown - the power of the unconscious, the cycle of life and the "dark" side of artists' images. We walk through all the halls and talked about how our imagination influences our impressions from the art works. We discussed how modern art today devotes a lot of attention to how the viewer reads and transforms for himself via the images that the artist offers him. We even tried to invent a new different meanings to an artists’ works before Maria explained what they were all about. After the tour we discussed what we saw and what we would like to "take home", and about what to learn more.

I really like two amazing aspects of the Argaman project - that we can go to unknown places, only for locals, and that we always have deep discussion at the end of the event.

EXCURSION TO TEL AVIV NECROPOLIS - TRUMPELDOR CEMETERY

The Trumpeldor cemetery tour in the center of Tel Aviv is one of guide Zeev Volk's best excursions! The day turned out to be rainy, but that did not prevent nearly 30 participants from gathering in a small cemetery to hear about philosophy, art, literature, music, war, economics and about everything that has made Israeli culture so bizarre and interesting. About the fate of those people whom the Jewish people buried here as their heroes.

Over the course of 3 hours, Zeev introduced the history of the most iconic people of Israel including Trumpeldor, Bialik, Arlozorov, Dizengoff and many others buried there, as well as the history of Jewish funeral rites themselves and changes in the types of monuments. Our guide showed us how Tel Aviv's old cemetery is more than just a cemetery, but one of several great pantheons in Eretz Yisrael, which has its own meaning and value.

FRIDAY SHABBAT SEMINAR #82 IN ARAD

The atmosphere of this seminar was amazing - very warm and family-like. The tiyul in Ein Bokek and our time in the Dead Sea were magical, and the lectures and activities on Shabbat were varied and interesting - something unique that I had not encountered in any other organization. I felt how we were all special and different, but we have so much in common: We are all Russian-speaking Israelis in the Land of Israel. This was not my first Shishi Shabbat Yisraeli seminar, but every seminar for me is like a holiday, putting routine aside and flying freely!
