RHYTHMS OF THE WHITE CITY, WITH INNA GORSHTEIN

The history of the development of a city not only about architecture, roads, and infrastructure, but the rhythm of its socio-cultural development - changes in its people who breathe the same air, walk the same streets. On this excursion we got acquainted with the cult places of Tel Aviv from a new perspective. Inna Gorstein shared Tel Aviv’s history through the eyes of its people – including public protests, trends in seeking freedoms and their boundaries.

I think it is very important to raise such complex issues. As a recent new Olah, I have practically no other opportunity to learn about these events. And knowing about them is important to properly understand peoples’ intentions and actions.

STREAMS OF JUDAISM BY HAIM NEIMARK

Haim Neimark has degrees in theoretical maths, sociology, economics and 22 years of informal educational teaching.

It is hard to understand your present without knowing your past. That is why Haim started his lecture from the times of the Second Temple, talking about the Pharisees, the Sadducees and the Essenees. To make it easier for us, he built a tree with one trunk and many many branches, which grew for centuries up to the present, explaining to us why now we have so many streams of Judaism and what role they play in our history and present life.

It's amazing how little we know about the history of our ancestors. For me, it was especially interesting to learn about how Jews lived during the times of the first Muslim dynasties. I am also grateful for learning the differences between the Orthodox and Conservative streams.

VIRTUAL TOUR AROUND HERODION NATIONAL PARK, WITH VLAD TELMAN

Pavel Bernshtein is an experienced Israeli guide, researcher and educator, and Master and Margarita is a great and mysterious book. During the lecture, Pavel shared with us his research about Bulgakovs life, and how he was able to connect three different worlds: Moscow, Jerusalem and the Magic underworld. Bulgakov had never been in Jerusalem, but described events and places that really existed at the time. Together with Pasha and Mikhail Bulgakov, we made an online “tour” of the Old city, discussing the main characters of the book and their prototypes, places and events that took place in the book and in history.

"Master and Margarita" is one of my favorite books, so I was waiting for this lecture for a long time. I was always curious about how Mikhail Bulgakov created his Jerusalem, where is the truth and where is the fiction. I am really inspired by lectures where you can trace the connection between Israel and world literature. Many thanks to Pasha and Shishi Shabbat!
